The pre sale show was kindly judged by Jimmy Bell and Frank Kitching, who we thank for their time and expertise, and sponsored by MB Nutrition, Carrs Billington, Lake District National Park & Joe Taylforth Sheep Scanning. Top end Swaledale ewes were regularly £170-£200, with good farming ewes £130-£160 with only smaller leaner ewes £120 or less.

2857 Swaledales ewes averaged £140.79, which is £23.43 up on the year. The champion pen of 2 crop ewes from E & A Wear, Hartsop went on to sell for £430. RS & BA Harker, Overthwaite sold their top pen of 3 crop ewes to £250 with Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale selling 3 crop ewes also at £250. Closely followed behind was GH & C Marwood, Newsham with 1 and 2 crop ewes achieving £245. JE & DJ Hutchinson, Cautley had 3 crop ewes making £240, with E & A Wear, Hartsop also at £240 with 2 crop ewes. A much admired run from Calderside Farm, Garstang topping at £230 for 3 crop ewes.

Swaledale shearlings saw top pens £200+, with plenty of honest working sorts from £170-£190. 583 Swaledale shearlings averaged £163.22, which is £39.22 up on the year. This section was topped at £250 from JA Alderson, Kirkby Stephen closely followed by Anthony Hartley, Seathwaite at £240, who sold others at £225. RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington achieved £235 closely followed by JA Simpson, Barnacre selling their much admired pen at £225.

Gimmer lambs concluded the Swaledale section, with 145 Swaledale gimmer lambs averaging £65.78. This section topped at £92 and £90 from the well followed annual consignment from Forest Hall Farm, Kendal closely followed by RA Lancaster, Coniston at £88.

Other Hill Breeds

Cheviot ewes averaged £98.54 with J Woof, Firbank saw a top of £195 and £180 for his 2 crop ewes. Cheviot shearlings averaged £149.02 with Naddle Farm, Penrith topping the shearlings at £162 and £152. 100 Herdwick ewes forward averaged £84.35. G Stephenson, Ravenstonedale topped at £98 and £92. Closely followed behind by RN Hoggarth, Howgill at £90 with VJ Edgar, Brampton also at £90.

Rough Fells

The annual show and sale of Rough Fell ewes and shearlings once again created a good deal of interest from buyers and onlookers nationwide. A terrific show of sheep were forward with credit going to the all vendors for their support. The presale show was kindly judged by Mr John Law, who we thank for sorting through the classes efficiently and expertly. Thanks also goes to the sponsors PV Dobson. The sale commenced with ewes, these all selling to average £101.81. Top call of £205 was achieved 3 times, firstly for a pair from VR Guy, Tebay with 3 more from this home at the same price. A further pair from NC & S Dodd, Kirkby Stephen reaching £205. Shearlings received as much interest, these levelling out at £106.76 and selling to a top of £150 for the 1st prize pair from SA Bland, Gaisgill. GW Robinson, Crooklands sold his first price pen of 10 from £145 whilst D Stephenson, Ravenstondale sold 5 for £132.

Gimmer Lambs sold to £75 from AJ Ellis, New Hutton with other pens to £70 from J Capstick, Sedbergh and J Hunter, Tebay.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs & Cast Sheep, Monday 30th September 2024.

North West Auctions saw sheep flock from far and wide to its popular Monday morning sale, with many returning customers well suited with previous weeks trade.

Prime Lambs

841 prime lambs saw a top price of 363p/kg achieved for a Texel cross lamb from CJ Metcalfe, Ingleton with other well bred lambs selling to 337p/kg from J&M Cockett, Ingleton, 326p/kg KA Purtill, Wigan and 320p/kg WS Burrow, Silverdale with numerous other pens 300p/kg to 315p/kg. Well finished first cross lambs were keenly sort after, selling to 303p/kg for Texel cross from H Birkett & Son, Overton with others at 302p/kg from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. Others were regularly 280p/kg to 295p/kg, with grass finished lambs 265p/kg to 280p/kg. Hill bred lambs sold to 290p/kg for Cheviots from KA Purtill, Wigan with Cheviot Mules to 279p/kg from CJ Metcalfe, Ingleton. Better end North Country Mules were 260p/kg to 270p/kg, with leaner sorts 240p/kg to 260p/kg. Heavy weight lambs continue to be a strong trade, selling to £169 for Texel cross from Messrs Hey & Son, Quernmore. Other heavy well finished lambs were £145 to £152. Well finished standard weight lambs were £118 to £126, and lighter weights £105 to £118, depending on quality and type.

Hard fed well finished lambs are required to satisfy buyer demand, with lighter weight and leaner lambs less desirable and perhaps more suited to the current buoyant store market.

237 cull ewes maintained the recent high prices, with another good entry required next week to fulfil buyers orders. Heavy first cross ewes sold to £152 for a pen of Texel cross from Pilling Hall, Pilling, with other medium continental cross ewes £115 to £130. A keen interest in feeding type ewes were £85 to £110. Mules sold to £126 from M&J Ronson, Pilling with other heavier Mules £112 to £122, medium £95 to £108, with healthy feeding types ewes £75 to £90. Pure hill ewes sold to £118 for Cheviots, with SBF to £82, Lonk £102, Swaledale £84 and Welsh to £68. Please keep these numbers coming and take advantage of the Monday morning trade. #LAMBS2LAM

Prime Lambs

A nice show of 1400 lambs were forward, with more meat on offer. Beltex lambs sold to £159 from P Stephenson, Settle with pens of heavy Texels to £158 from Clark & Johnson, Windermere and £157 from Jake Gibson, Kendal. Heavy continental bred lambs full of meat and fed were regularly selling at £140 plus. Best bred Beltex sold to 350p/kg from JJ&J Woof & Sons, Dent and others to 320p/kg from JR Robinson, Endmoor with the best types 300p/kg plus. Good fit commercial lambs were 278p/kg to 285p/kg. More hill bred lambs forward today, with Cheviot Mules to £128 from JG&PH Thompson & Sons, Selside with Mules to the same price from WH Kitchen & Son, Heslington. A ring full of Mules sold to £120.50 from JD&M Capstick, Bootle.

Numbers rising every week, with a much planer show forward today with 847 through the ring and all sold. The best pure continental ewes sold to £250 for Texels, with other medium pure-bred ewes £170 to £200. The best first cross ewes sold to £181 for Texel cross with the heavier end £150 to £170, nice mediums £125 to £140 and better feeding types £95 to £115. Heavy weight Mules sold to £155, with a large entry of mediums £90 to £110, depending on quality and types. Endless pens of grazing Mule ewes were £60 to £80, depending on quality and types. Pure hill ewes sold to £127 for Cheviots, £100 for Lleyn, Gritstones £85, Rough Fells £81 and Swaledales £75. A large entry of worn hard worked horned ewes ranging from £35 to £50, depending on quality and type, with the very smallest and leanest of all types at realisation.

Boys are Back in Town

Customers from far and wide flooded to NWA J36 for the popular ‘Boys are Back in Town’ evening sale of breeding rams. All breeds were eagerly competed for with vendors leaving well suited with prices achieved. Suffolk shearlings sold to £1100 from M Kennedy and RA Batty, with all sold averaging £806. Suffolk lambs sold to £700 from Messrs Hewson averaging £495, several older rams saw two shears sell to £700 from J&C Airey. Texel shearlings sold to £1100 from PK&R Woof with others at £1050 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, averaging £585. Texel lambs sold to £720 from SW Huck, averaging £624. Older Texels sold to £780 from J Smith. Other notable prices included Charollais cross shearlings selling to £700 from H Taylor & Partners, Beltex cross shearlings £900 WW&D Boow and Dutch Spotted shearlings £450 JA&R Caton. Rouge shealings sold to £500 from I McConnell. Charollais lambs sold to £500 from BR Harrison. A traditional Blue Faced Leicester lamb from Messrs Hewson sold to £600.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: First Show & Sale of Suckler Calves. Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM Cattle & Store Cattle, Thursday 3rd October 2024. Calves

A large entry of 163 calves and stirks forward, with rearing calves slightly harder to place than previous months. The best end was however still good to sell, with one month old British Blue bulls selling to £415 and £400 from A Pickthall, New Hutton and Charolais bulls from Bambers Farm, Turnham to £410 and £400 (x2). Native sired saw Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to £300 from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack.

Heifer calves sold to £410 twice firstly from A Pickthall, New Hutton for British Blues with others from this home to £400. Also at £410 was Charolais from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor with their home providing another at £400. Also reaching £400 was a one month old cracker of a British Blue from DW&EA Cottam, New Hutton. Stirks sold to a top of £1090 for a Limousin bullock from Bambers Farm, Thurnham with this home producing Simmentals to £990 and Aberdeen Angus to £955 (x6). A quartet of Hereford cross bullocks reached £910 from AF&BA Dawson, Sedbergh with this home selling Friesians to £750.

Bull stirks reached £650 for a four and a half month old Charolais from AK&BM Robinson, Arkholme.

Heifer stirks sold to a top of £930 for a Limousin from Bambers Farm, Thurnham with others to £880 (x2) from this consignment.

Perhaps a more weather entry of store cattle forward but selling to more buyer interest to keep sheds full. Steers sold to £1730 for a Limousin cross from D&D Huddleston, Wray with British Blue cross achieving £1610 from M Moorhouse, Grange Over Sands. Other stronger beef steers were £1400 to £1550, with wintering sorts £1120 to £1280. Store heifers sold to £1490 for a Limousin cross from M&D Hatton, Broughton in Furness with British Blues to £1440 from TW Nelson, Stainton. Other wintering heifers were £1220 to £1350, with yearlings £920 to £1050.

OTM Cattle

An entry of predominantly parlour type dairy cows, saw the best sell to 191.5p/kg from S&M Cooper, Leece with other stronger end 170p/kg to 185p/kg, plainer parlour types were 140p/kg to 150p/kg with lighter weights and leaner sorts 105p/kg to 120p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian at £1408, with others at £1320 and £1322. Only a handful of beef cows forward which sold to 219.5p/kg for Limousin cross from MJ&JD Handley, Sedbergh with other better feeding types190p/kg to 210p/kg, with hard worked recently weaned sucker cows 160p/kg to 180p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was a Limousin at £1591, with an Aberdeen Angus achieving £1514. Other feeding type beef cows were £1150 to £1400.

A single OTM beef heifers sold to 197.5p/kg and £1629 for a British Blue cross, with OTM beef steers to 149p/kg and £1631 again for British Blue cross.

A single cull stock bull sold to 179p/kg and £1491 for a Hereford.

Calves & Weanlings

A smaller show of 58 calves and weanlings were forward today at Lancaster. Bull calves topped at £510 for a brute of a Hereford from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with a British Blue from J&G Thornley, Kirkham next in line at £460. Charolais sold to £460 from JS&KM Wilson, Kendal and Aberdeen Angus cross to £420 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham.

Heifer calves sold to £380 for an Aberdeen Angus from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Hereford to £370 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Predominately native sired heifers in today, offerings saw other Angus to £360 from A Shepherd, Preesall and £340 from JS&KM Wilson, Kendal. Weanlings sold to £600 for a British Blue steer from Barker Farms, Carnforth with Angus steers to £550 from Mason Birkland Barrow, Over Kellet.

Bull Calves Top Prices: Hereford: £510 Catshaw Hall Farm, £370 Barrow Greaves Farm. British Blue: £460 Derby Lodge Farm, £410 Roe Farm, £370 Barrow Greaves Farm, £360 High House, £350 Roe Farm, £220 Norbreck Farm. Charolais : £450 High House, £400 Bolton Fold Farm, £370 High House, £270 Norbreck Farm. Angus: £420 Derby Lodge Farm, £380 High House, £350 Roe Farm, £295 Wyre Bank, £290 North Farm. Store Cattle

212 store cattle forward today with trade holding well for all goods. Top today was £1980 this paid for a Charolais from JM Haddow, Hinchaster. Limousin sold to £1860 from WS Burrow, Silverdale and £1740 paid for a pair of British Blues from H Birkett & Son, Overton. Native sired steers to £1700 for Aberdeen Angus from R Townsend, Freckleton and Shorthorns to £1620 from EW&CR Clegg, Stalmine.

A large show of Black and White steers were forward, with these reaching £1140 from GE&AP Hewitt, Cockerham with others to £1380 from this home.

Heifers to £1640 for a pair of British Blues from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall. A pair of Limousin to £1600 from AT Burrow & Sons, Hornby. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £1550 from EW&CR Clegg, Stalmine with this this home selling Simmentals to £1500.

105 cattle through the cast ring today, sold to an overall average of 175p/kg for a very weathered entry. Well finished and well fed beef cows sold to 244p/kg from AE Atkinson, Endmoor with other strongest end beef cows 195p/kg to 210p/kg, with feeding types 180p/kg to 192p/kg. Top grossing being an Aberdeen Angus from GR&A Foy, Conder Green totalling £1586, with other beef cows £1200 to £1450. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 191p/kg for a Montbeliarde form EW&RM Towers, Hornby. Holstein Friesian to 184p/kg form T Taylor, Woodplumpton and DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland. Meated dairy cows were 170p/kg to 182p/kg, harder worked 175p/kg to 160p/kg, with learner and lighter weights less. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from T Taylor, Woodplumpton totalling £1660. Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows were £1150 to £1300.

OTM beef heifer sold to 259.5p/kg for a Hereford from MS&G Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale with other well finished heavy heifers 210p/kg to 240p/kg, with better diary type heifers 180p/kg to 205p/kg. Top grossing being a Holstein Friesian from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel totalling £1606.

OTM steers sold to 259.5p/kg for a British Friesian from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling with beef steers 210p/kg to 240p/kg and diary bred 170p/kg to 195p/kg. Top grossing being an Aberdeen Angus achieving £1704, with other £1692 and £1660. A single Aberdeen Angus stock bull achieved 214.5p/kg and £1610.
