Emerl (エメル) is a combat robot who serves as the main character and primary plot device in Sonic Battle. Emerl was built 4,000 years ago and was found by Professor Gerald Robotnik. Later the Gizoid is named "Emerl" by Sonic on account of its ability to absorb Chaos Emeralds.[1]

Personality and traits

Emerl is a battle robot with the ability to upgrade himself by copying the moves of others. He can customize his combat style and even his appearance whenever he chooses.Media:SonicBattle GBA US manual.pdf[2] He is drawn to the Chaos Emeralds and the strongest beings around.[3] Gaining the Chaos Emeralds however causes Emerl to loose control.[1] Emerl joins up with whoever can establish a "Link" with him, making him serve under them. Emerl also copies the traits of anyone's personalities he comes across.

As the player progresses in the Story Mode of Sonic Battle, Emerl gains new abilities to use. These abilities are the various moves known by Sonic and the other characters in the game as well as being fully awakened moves of his own. In his own story he's also able to enter "Virtual Training" made by Tails and have a better time of unlocking more of his fully awakened abilities, most of them are from Sonic but it's also possible to unlock those abilities as well, very rarely it's also possible to unlock as early as the end of Sonic's episode or in the middle of the one for Rouge.

History

Sonic Battle

During Tails' episode in Sonic Battle, the Central City Lab computer reports that Emerl was initially found amongst "ancient ruins" - and subsequently plucked out of a storage warehouse by Professor Gerald Robotnik (according to his journal). On the Space Colony ARK 50 years ago, the Professor proceeded to experiment with Emerl, at around the same time he was working on Project Shadow. Gerald's grandson, Dr Eggman, later rediscovered the robot and took him in the hopes of using him to rule the world, but tosses him aside when he finds no use for him. Sonic the Hedgehog finds him on a beach and he and his friends teach him how to fight.

Sonic Advance 3

After Emerl was destroyed, Dr. Eggman used the android's data to create a new combat robot named Gemerl.[4]

Non-canon game appearances

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

Emerl is said to be the most powerful Gizoid ever created by the Nocturnus Clan. As the game was removed from continuity, Emerl's real creators are unknown.[3]

Other game appearances

Emerl has cameo appearances in Sonic Mega Collection Plus, as a card in Sonic Rivals 2, and as a sticker in both Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. In Sonic Colours, Emerl is one of the default names for save files. In Sonic Generations, Emerl's name is on a billboard for Chao In Space. A Mii costume based on Emerl appears in Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
