Theoretical foundations are established for the thesis that neoconservatism always appears when capitalism is in danger, while the 2008 crisis represented only the tip of an iceberg warning the gravity of the structural crisis of capitalism. In that respect, neoconservatism is an ideological/ political attempt to preserve existing relations in the world capitalist system, disturbed by the accelerated globalization process.

Results show elites from Southern Europe to be the main proponents of further EU integration, while Eastern European elites are the most cautious. Variables with the strongest in uence are economic development (measured by GDP per capita), the prevalent religious denomination (respondents from predominantly Protestant countries are less ready to support stronger EU integration than those from mostly Catholic countries), ethnic homogeneity (increasing level of homogeneity reduces elites' orientation towards stronger EU integration), and the existence of separatist experience (elites from countries with recent independence by secession are less oriented toward EU integration than those from countries without secession problems).

The paper analyzes the attitude of the political elite and the media in Serbia towards migrants and the migrant crisis four years after a large number of refugees...

The focus is on the cultural or culture-determined obstacles bearing upon the (lack of) understanding between the local and foreign, primarily European institutions. The paper presents data obtained though in depth interviews with political elite members. The analysis follows several cultural dimensions such as: communication, values,, life style,, material culture, and emphasizes existing differences on each of them. Nevertheless, the basic conclusion contends that these differences, although not negligible, are not insurmountable.

At different times in their history, these countries had a strong impulse toward economic protectionism. After the Second World War, the free trade became dominant concept on the world scale and many scholars took it as the key indicator of the globalization process. However, a new protectionism also appeared, primarily in developed countries. At the beginning of new millennium, in spite of some successful attempts to liberalize world free trade, such efforts still face formidable obstacles. We argue that these obstacles are not principally economic in nature but are the outcomes of deliberate efforts to conserve the actual world order. Therefore, we conclude, the free trade appears not to be a condition of globalization. Rather it is the opposite, the globalization, in its wider sense, is the condition sine qua non of the free trade.

There were, of course, several basic common points which made the EU an attractive proposition: in economic terms it offered integration into the European capitalist market economy (which would guarantee systemic change, higher growth rates and abundant donations and investments from the EU); in political terms it provided a ‘fast-track’ accession process to EU membership (which would secure not only the best way to achieve the first (economic) goal but also would guarantee a radical break with the ‘danger from the East’); in cultural terms it facilitated interpenetration with the Western value system (which would instantly confirm that these countries ‘have always belonged’ to the West). Whilst being drawn to the EU by these attractive prospects, the elites of these various countries faced starkly contrasting situations across all spheres of social life: unequal rates of modernisation (relatively early modernising countries such as the Czech Republic as compared with latecomers such as Bulgaria or Serbia); historical experiences of different legal systems (the Austrian and the Ottoman traditions); and religious diversity, combining a range of Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Muslim, or multifaith populations. Within the political sphere, it is of particular interest to our study that the collapse of communism came about with the dissolution of the Soviet empire, and of two other federal states (Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia), which led to the emergence of new

The aim of the paper, set in the opening section, is to investigate the topics which are dealt with by sociologists in Serbia during this turbulent historical period. On the basis of this analysis, answers to the following questions will be attempted: has Serbian sociology kept track, and to what extent, of the changes taking place in the society, and hence how much it has been under the influence of the latter. In the second part of the article the openness of the Serbian sociology toward the world is discussed in the context of aforementioned changes. In order to make judgments and conclusions as objective as possible this topic is considered in a comparative framework - comparing it with conditions in Croatian sociology.
