Sequential analyses of δ13C, δ18O and Δ47 values of calcite and dolomite deposited in millimetre‐... more Sequential analyses of δ13C, δ18O and Δ47 values of calcite and dolomite deposited in millimetre‐sized cavities are reported from the Ronaldsway Member packstones, Isle of Man. The Ronaldsway brachiopods have δ13C values of ca +2.3‰ and δ18O values of ca −7.2‰; carbon is like predicted Carboniferous values, while oxygen values are more negative. The brachiopods show preserved microstructure but have marginal alteration and a streaky cathodoluminescence pattern. Crinoid ossicles have δ13C values of ca +2.3‰ and one with a δ18O value of ca −3.1‰, compatible with Carboniferous marine precipitates; three samples have δ18O values of ca −6.5‰ and are 18O‐depleted. Calcite stages 1 and 2 have δ13C values ca +3.2‰ and δ18O values ca −2.5‰, compatible with Carboniferous sea water. Stage 1 and 2 have non‐luminescent to orange CL zones. The oceanographic cruise 89 (RRS James Cook) sailed in 2013 off the Iberian margin in support of ... more The oceanographic cruise 89 (RRS James Cook) sailed in 2013 off the Iberian margin in support of an IODP proposal centred on IODP Site 1385. JC089 collected a range of hydrographic data and recovered a set of short sediment cores. We focus on 11 of the later, sampling the hydrography of the last c.400 years along a bathymetric gradient (600-4600 m). The stable isotopes (δ 18 O & δ 13 C) for: 8 common benthic foraminifer species with varied habitat preferences, the sediment porewater and the bottom water above the sites were measured. The geochemical data is compared to various sedimentary and micropalaeontological data. The later comprises abundances of the main benthic foraminifera species >212μm, checking for living position of the endo-fauna in RoseBengal stained samples and for the abundances of phytodetritus-loving species E.exigua in the >90μm for all the 0-1cm samples. It is a longstanding observation that the frequency of volcanism periodically changes at times of... more It is a longstanding observation that the frequency of volcanism periodically changes at times of global climate change. The existence of causal links between volcanism and Earth’s climate remains highly controversial, partly because most related studies only cover one glacial cycle. Longer records are available from marine sediment profiles in which the distribution of tephras records frequency changes of explosive arc volcanism with high resolution and time precision. Here we show that tephras of IODP Hole U1437B (northwest Pacific) record a cyclicity of explosive volcanism within the last 1.1 Myr. A spectral analysis of the dataset yields a statistically significant spectral peak at the ~100 kyr period, which dominates the global climate cycles since the Middle Pleistocene. A time-domain analysis of the entire eruption and δ18O record of benthic foraminifera as climate/sea level proxy shows that volcanism peaks after the glacial maximum and ∼13 ± 2 kyr before the δ18O minimum rig...
