It is important to perform thorough clinical investigation to exclude vascular, infectious, inflammatory, toxic, metabolic, and compressive causes. Case Report: Clinical records of one patient from University of Pittsburgh Medical Center were retrospectively reviewed and discussed in this case report. A 33-year-old male with history of stage IA germ cell testicular cancer presented to the emergency department with a three-day history of progressive, painless vision loss to No Light Perception (NLP) bilaterally. He was diagnosed with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis and promptly treated with anticoagulation, acetazolamide, high dose corticosteroids, venous thrombectomy and ventriculoperitoneal shunt. He achieved significant improvement of vision after treatment. Discussion: The broad range of clinical characteristics can make the diagnosis of CVT challenging. Symptoms include headache, focal neurologic ...

The study aimed to analyse the bioactive compound content and the antioxidant capacity of plums of the Bluefree, Stanley and Sweet Common Prune (Wegierka Zwykla) varieties, depending on the drying and extraction processes applied. Significant differences in the bioactive compound content and the antioxidant capacity were found between the varieties under study. The convection drying process resulted in the greatest significant decrease in both the anthocyanin pigment content (by an average of 82%) and the total polyphenol content (by an average of 41%). The average losses of phenolic acids reached 34%, and the greatest decrease was noted for chlorogenic acid (an average of 69%). As regards flavan-3-ols and flavonols, the drying processes caused their losses by an average of 56%. The vacuum drying and lyophilisation processes applied were softer for the tested bioactive compounds. Moreover, these processes reduced the ABTS and FRAP antioxidant capacity. The ultrasound- and microwave-assisted extraction increased the total anthocyanin content by an average of 29%. These methods yielded significantly greater amounts of all four determined anthocyanins in the tested fruit. The results show that the search for a safe, inexpensive raw material drying method is still a current research issue.

In recent years, the use of biostimulants in vegetable crops has become a way to affect the quantity and quality of yields. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the type and methods of biostimulant (natural seaweed extract Kelpak and synthetic Asahi) application on the nitrates and nitrites content in carrot roots after harvest and storage. The study was based on a strict field experiment with carrot cv. ′Karotan′, conducted in Poland (53°13′N; 17°51′E) in three successive growing seasons and after six months of storage (RH 95%, and air temperature +1 °C). The biostimulants were applied during the growing season in a foliar form. The content of NO3ˉ and NO2ˉ in carrot after harvest depended on the dose and the date of biostimulant application. The single application of biostimulant Kelpak as well as two times of Asahi had no effect on the nitrate and nitrite content, while the application ...

Besides this, the amount of human intake of nitrates (III) found in the carrot products analysed was assayed. The effect on environment resulting from the changes in carrot growing technology was not so unambiguous as for nitrates (V) since most NO2¯ was contained in, for example, processed foods from non-biofortified Mg material. The consumption of products was not hazardous to the consumer since it did not exceed Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) NO2¯. Most nitrates (III) are consumed with dried carrot and least - with carrot preserved in jars. For this reason, one should run a thorough monitoring of the contents of nitrates (III), toxic to humans since new products based on dried carrot material, such as crisps, are launched in the consumer market.

They affect the increase in biodiversity, contribute to improving the condition of cleanliness of watercourses, improve local water relations and restore the natural landscape of river valleys.Rapid increase in the European beaver population in Poland in 21st century determines and accelerates the process of renaturalization of the areas that have undergone partial degradation as a result of anthropopressure. A singular example is the river valleys populated by beavers that have been adapted to people’s needs in the last centuries, which has inevitably exerted an undesirable effect.

A study was carried out in 2013–2015 to determine the effect of the cultivation technology and storage on the safety of parsley intended for processing. The study material was taken from an experiment where the following fertilisers were applied to the ground: nitrogen (0, 40, 80, 120 kg N∙ha−1) and magnesium (0; 30 kg Mg∙ha−1). Parsley roots were stored for six months in a storage room at +1°C and RH 95%. The content of nitrates (V) and (III) was determined by the ion selective method immediately after the harvest and after storage in parsley roots. The highest levels of nitrates (V) and (III) were found in parsley roots in the cultivation option where nitrogen for fertilisation was applied at the greatest ...
