Employing an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the study aims at uncovering the root causes, characteristics, and potential solutions to child labor in the specified region. Four specific objectives guide the research: 1) identifying the causes of child labor, 2) understanding the nature of child labor, 3) exploring the socioeconomic conditions of children engaged in labour, and 4) proposing strategies to eliminate child labour. The study, based on qualitative data gathered from ten child labourers in Fagge Local Government Area, reveals that extreme poverty and the pursuit of survival drive children into labor. Surprisingly, the participants derive a sense of dignity from their work, viewing it as a preferable alternative to begging or stealing. The findings also underscore the sacrifice of education for work, not due to a lack of awareness of its value, but rather stemming from the impoverished socioeconomic conditions of parents. A critical revelation is the absence of statistical records and social intervention programmes on child labour in the study area, highlighting the need for increased public awareness, robust social interventions, and stringent law enforcement to combat the menace of child labour. This research contributes to the discourse on child labour in Nigeria, offering insights into the lived experiences of those directly affected and proposing holistic strategies for eradication.

The Nigerian state in particular is witnessing a surge in acts of violence, ideological conflicts, human trafficking, extremism, terrorism, and civil strife of all sorts. The paper analyzed the concept of social justice in relation to the issue of insecurity in the Nigerian society with a view of exploring the imperative of a broad based, universal education in addressing the challenge. Social justice is conceived in this paper as a moral and political concept that is fundamental towards realization of equitable, humane, and peaceful society. Social injustice is manifesting in the Nigerian society by way of inequity in resource allocation to critical sectors of the economy, lack of respect for human dignity, and unbalanced reward systems in all aspects of national life. The paper identified provision of quality, universal, broad-based education as a key factor in structuring the human mind towards peace and harmony within itself and the rest of world. Nigeria is witnessing social tension occasioned by social economic challenges facing the country.... more Nigeria is witnessing social tension occasioned by social economic challenges facing the country. To overcome the challenges, the human capital is required to harness the material resources for development. Possession of knowledge and skill by the citizens would be inadequate to perform this role, if not completed by sound character necessary for societal wellbeing. This paper uses the method of philosophical analysis to examine the concepts of character and character education in the context of their significance to developing individuals who can drive development of society. Literatures and documents that are related to character education and socioeconomic development of nations were surveyed and analysed. The study revealed that character, especially in the African context, refers to aggregate of human qualities that mark an individual out from other people. Character education as the process of helping an individual to acquiring worthwhile habits necessary for becoming self-motivated, morally competent members of society is germane for socioeconomic development. The paper highlights critical issues such as collapse of family values, bad role-modeling, skewed educational system and absence of consequences for bad behaviour as deserving of attention in order to arrest the trend of moral decadence that is impeding Nigeria's quest for socioeconomic development.

There is therefore the need for values education of the coming generation in order to halt the negative trend. The paper critically explored some approaches to values education that are available in literature and in practice with an eye on the Nigerian situation with a view to proposing a paradigm of values education that would make values permeate the entire life and culture of schools. The paper advanced that, bearing in mind the fluid and ubiquitous nature of values, they tend to be inherent in all subjects and activities within the school system. The paper highlighted with examples how values can be integrated into and also be teased out of the content as well as the methods of teaching school subjects in the arts, mathematics and sciences. Recommendations were made for institutional support for values education, training and retraining of teachers in alignment with the role of a teacher as a moral compass for learners, review of teacher education curriculum and creating conducive social environment for inculcation of positive values of society.

An attempt is made to show philosophical research as an independent mode of investigation and how it also serves as the foundation of educational research. It is argued that no single method of inquiry can adequately address all educational problems. Hence, scientific research is not the only method of research in education. Educational research is any conscious, systematic, deliberate, and disciplined activity aimed at connecting an educational problem with a possible solution. Three methods of philosophical inquiry; namely analysis, prescription and speculation are discussed with a view to illustrating how they enrich researches in education

Nigeria has witnessed some degree of social instability in recent years. This has manifested in insecurity of life and property, extreme poverty, youth unemployment, and mutual distrust in basic human relationships. The education sector can be implicated in the challenge of instability as it is the system which is saddled with the responsibility of human capital development. The education system seems to be lopsided towards intellectual development of learners as opposed to balanced (cognitive, affective and skill) development of individuals. This paper adopts method of philosophical analysis to survey relevant literatures and theoretical postulations on human freedom and social stability with a view of interrogating how extensive guarantee of freedom could be reconciled with realization of human development. The paper underscores the school system as a point of early social interaction, and a focal point in preparing individuals for participation in social life by way of inculcating in them the consciousness of their dependence on others in spite of their independence as free beings. It is advanced that education system needs to focus on producing balanced and cultured individuals who can rationally exercise their freedom. An integrative moral education model of teaching moral is proposed as innovative pedagogical skill which teachers can adopt to enhance learners' social consciousness.

Value disorientation in Nigerian society is evident in high level of corruption, insecurity, lack of trust in basic human relationships and deep rooted social injustice. Education is supposed to be a panacea to social ills. However, this can only be guaranteed when it is positioned to address vital social problems. The education system of a society will remain comatose as long as the teachers are ill-prepared, half-baked and lack regular training. Teachers require competence in instilling virtues in learners in order to re-orientate the learners towards societal positive values. The current teacher education in Nigeria is skewed towards cognitive development of teacher with little or nothing to show in terms of development of their capacity to effect positive and desirable changes in the affective and attitudinal development of learners. Teachers would continue to be found wanting in influencing learners positively as long as their own moral development is left to chance. This paper suggests ways of infusing value education into the current teacher education in Nigeria at the pre-service and in-service levels such that teacher are equipped with the skills and competencies to become moral agents irrespective of their subject area.

The present-day societies are characterised with various social vices. The best to way to address these unfortunate negative tendencies is by inculcating the right values into the mind of younger generations who spend a significant number of their formative years in the school system. This study is quantitative and using a descriptive survey design to investigate the extent to which teachers in secondary school utilize the value components of the National Policy on Education for teaching/learning process in Kano State, Nigeria. A survey questionnaire was developed and validated to collect data that were analysed using SPSS 20. Similarly, research questions and formulated hypotheses were tested using inferential statistics. Based on the research findings, it is concluded that secondary school teachers in Kano State, Nigeria do not adequately utilize value component of the NPE in classroom instructions irrespective of their qualifications, teaching experiences and gender. Therefore, skills of identifying the value components of school subjects should be inculcated retraining should be included in the pre-service teacher training and such should be all-inclusive by accommodating teachers at all levels.

The paper examines the concept of Learner - Centered Pedagogy (LCP) within the context of Nigerian education, with a view of proposing how the seeming gap in the theory and practice of the concept can be bridged. While the National Policy on Education stipulates that teaching, especially as the basic education level should be participatory, exploratory, experimental, and learner centered, it appears that teaching practices in the country are still largely tilted towards teacher - centered pedagogy. It is argued that while learner centered pedagogy has become well entrenched in classroom practices in the Global North, its establishment in Nigerian schools would require more than a mere policy statement to actualize. Suggestions are offered to government, teachers and teacher educators on how to make (LCP) effective in Nigerian schools.
