This paper is mainly based on secondary data analysis of the available secondary information and news reports, online articles, academic literature, interviews and discussions. The war between Ethiopia and Eritrea brought political, economic and social security threats to the Horn of Africa. Although the economy in Ethiopia is at the developing stage, recent protests have shaken the country to its core. Since 2015, anti-government protests have been triggered over freedom of the press, land rights, under-represented seats in the coalition parties, and horizontal inequality in economic, political and social affairs among ethnic groups across the country. In this study, it is established that the unrestrained political circumstance of the current regim...

Methodology/approach: This study utilises both primary and secondary data. The available literature is also reviewed. The primary data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and discussions from: (i) several authority offices in Ethiopia, sources close to authorities, information-rich informants, employees, and (ii) perspectives, perceptions, and prospects from individual members of society. Findings: The study unmasks the win-win cooperation strategy from the perspective of the members of society in Ethiopia, evaluates whether China and India have strings attached or land grabbing motives. The study also shows that whether China’s and India’s mov...

This study focuses on the presence of the Asian countries in terms of institutional theory, historical connections, instrumental motivations and political engagement with Africa in general, and with Ethiopia in particular. India offers non-pecuniary value, such as scholarship and technical assistance, whereas China focuses on a wider range of economic aids and non-pecuniary packages; thus, both countries are well positioned in Africa. This study is an exercise audit of the impact of Chinese and Indian economic activities on Ethiopia’s economic growth and examines the period from 1992 to 2016 from historical and contemporary perspectives. This study also includes a case study of members of Ethiopian society’s attitudes towards the presence and prospects of Chinese and Indian investment projects and its perceptions of these...

Lack of political stability in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and the North African countries, the existence of a number of socio-political, economic, religious and cultural factors that are likely to provoke the economy of the continent had been a headline for long. This paper organized chronologically, beginning with the reign of civilization, continues to the means of political instability and concludes with a different perspective of fundamental aspects of African countries. By seeking the truth from facts, this paper contributes to the gap of knowledge for the African nation and the foreign countries about the political condition, trends and economic diversification of Africa. This paper also investigates few issues including the possibilities of Africa's political turbulence and provides an overview of the major considerations assoc...

Additionally, the paper analyses the Western perception and implication towards the Sino-African geopolitical cooperation and clarifies whether China is taking advantage of the weak African states in the name of South–South cooperation or playing the role of a contemporary proxy of the old colonial system and re-partitioning Africa. The relation between China and Africa simultaneously presents both challenges and opportunities for either of them. This study argues that the criticism that China is invading the continent and practicing neo-colonialism is just a speculation or Sino-phobia. In fact, the Chinese have no gene in their blood to invade Africa and it is crystal clear that unlike China, the Western world has had an influential history in the African continent. The African government and their societies have the ability to address the issues of Sino-African relations. This paper additionally provides a theoretical analysis of China’s enthusiastic involvement and contribution to the international aid operations and its presence and contribution in Africa.

Using remote sensing and socioeconomic data, this paper analyses farmland transition, its landscape structure, and the associated drivers in Pingtan Island. The results revealed that the decline of farmland was much faster (317 ha/year) compared with its expansion (106.9 ha/year) during the study period. Across periods, farmland experienced a moderate-to-very rapid intensity of change. It tends to lose than to persist and its stable part decreased continuously. The changed part of farmland was largely attributable to the swap changes than that of the net change. Both its inward and outward conversions were generally limited to a few dominant cover types that include urban, shrub, forest and grassland. In response to farmland shrinkage and the increase of labour wages in other economic sectors, farmers have engaged in off-farm activities to support their economy, besides the compensation they owned from the government. The shape complexity and the variability of size among farmland patches showed a decrease. Except in the first period; however, the level of disintegration among patches increased successively. Both expanded and stable part of farmland exhibited more dispersed spatial configuration than that of the decreased part in the last two decades (1996–2017). Farmland change was significantly influenced by factors such as GDP, wage, per capita GDP, road expansion and the total population in the first component of a regression model (C1) that contains the highest proportion of variance in both dependent and explanatory variables (≥ 72%). Policies of ecological management and economic development also accelerated farmland decline, which calls for its stricter protection policies. The result of this study would serve as the baseline information for farmland management in the study area and as a reference for future studies.
