Una revisión de la Literatura sobre los Costos de la Inflación

Abstract

¿Por qué algunos gobiernos escogen tolerar la inflación? la respuesta Keynesiana tradicional ha sido que existe una relación inversa entre la inflación y el desempleo. Asi, en cierta forma, la inflación es deseable porque lleva a una reducción en la tasa de desempleo. Pero esta justificación básica para la existencia de la inflación se abandonó por la mayor parte de los economistas después de la experiencia de los años setenta cuando el estancamiento de la economía fue acompañado de tasas altas de inflación. Sin embargo, esta defensa para tolerar tasas de inflación relativamente altas constituye gran parte de las creencias populares. En este ensayo,trataremos de ir más allá de la explicación dada por la curva de Phillips tradicional, con base en un resumen amplio de la literatura más reciente acerca de los costos y las consecuencias de la inflación. El trabajo está dividido en tres secciones principales. La sección siguiente trata los costos de la inflación en una economía ideal sin distorsiones. La Sección III resume los costos de la inflación incierta, mientras que el enfoque de la cuarta sección es sobre los costos de la inflación en una economía con distorsiones. La sección V presenta las principales conclusiones.
