  1. Michael A. Nolan (2000): Spell durations and the impact of censoring
A grouped hazard approach for analysing multiple-spell durations subject to censoring is applied to spells of absence from the workplace. We follow Barmby, Orme and Treble's (1991) procedure for dealing with unobserved heterogeneity, but argue that their treatment of the observed discrete data, and the inherent censoring, is inappropriate and could lead to significant overestimation of duration dependence.

  2. Carlos Gradín & Olga Cantó & Coral del Río (2012): Unemployment and Spell Duration during the Great Recession in the EU
It is generally accepted that the negative impact of unemployment on individual welfare can be very different depending on its duration. However, conventional statistics on unemployment do not adequately capture to what extent the recession is not only increasing the incidence of unemployment but also its severity in terms of duration in time of ongoing unemployment spells. In this paper, we follow Shorrocks’s (2009a,b) proposal of a duration-sensitive measure of unemployment in order to analyze the different dynamic characteristics of unemployment in a selected group of European Union countries during the current Great Recession. Our results add some evidence on the relevance of incorporating the duration dimension in measuring unemployment and provide a tool for dynamic analysis based on cross-sectional data.

  3. Francisco José Goerlich Gisbert & Alba Miñano (2018): Unemployment, spell duration and the burden of unemployment in Spain during the XXI Century
This paper presents the families of unemployment indexes sensitive to unemployment duration developed by Sengupta (2009) and Shorrocks (2009a, 2009b). ... In particular, when unemployment duration is taken into account, a less optimistic view of the recent recovery appears, since one of the consequences of the Great Recession has been the huge increase in the very long-term unemployed.

  4. Anh Tu Le & Thai-Ha Le & Wai-Man Liu & Kingsley Y. Fong (2021): Dynamic limit order placement strategies: survival analysis with a multiple-spell duration model
This study investigates the multiple events that occur in the life of each limit order by utilising a survival analysis methodology with a multiple-spell duration model. ... Using a multiple-spell duration model to examine the full spectrum of events that occur in the life of a limit order is thus shown to be informative and essential in modelling dynamic limit order placement strategies.

  5. Carlos Gradín & Olga Cantó & Coral del Río (2015): Unemployment and spell duration during the Great Recession in the EU
Design/methodology/approach - – The paper follows Shorrocks’s proposal of a duration-sensitive measure of unemployment, and uses cross-sectional data reported by Eurostat coming from European Labour Force Surveys. Findings - – The results add some evidence on the relevance of incorporating spellsduration in measuring unemployment, finding remarkable differences in unemployment patterns in time among European countries. ... Practical implications - – It is generally accepted that the negative impact of unemployment on individual welfare can be very different depending on its duration. However, conventional statistics on unemployment do not adequately capture to what extent the recession is not only increasing the incidence of unemployment but also its severity in terms of duration in time of ongoing unemployment spells. ... Second, the paper demonstrates the empirical relevance of considering spellsduration when assessing differences in unemployment across countries or in unemployment trends.

  6. Ewa Galecka-Burdziak (2016): Multiple unemployment spells duration in Poland
I study multiple unemployment spells. I refer to Poland, as this country experiences high incidence of the long-term unemployment and long mean incomplete unemployment duration. I estimate conditional risk set model for multiple spells, and Cox model for 1st to 5th spell, separately. ... Almost 99% of the individuals have up to 5 spells, but ''only'' 60% of them experience one complete spell.I find that subsequent unemployment spells are on average shorter, but slightly more individuals experience longer subsequent spells. ... Tertiary education, since 2nd spell, also entails higher hazard of leaving the pool.

  7. Marcel-Cristian Voia & Mihailo Radoman (2013): Youth Training Programs and their Impact on Career and Spell Duration of Professional Soccer Players
The home team (first) spell and career durations of these soccer players in a top European leagues is modeled using robust hazard models. The results of the analysis show that players that start their professional careers after acquiring training in competitive youth academy/programs have different outcomes on their career and first spell duration depending on the clubs they start their training. The first spell duration analysis is performed to estimate the bond or loyalty factor established by clubs with their youth trainees. The spell analysis outlines the nature of the competitive environment in which smaller clubs have a chance to keep up with the larger ones in terms of producing and holding on to home-grown talent. ... The analysis of career duration in the top European leagues will show the success of a specifc academy's training programs in producing players competitive in top soccer leagues.

  8. Mihailo Radoman & Marcel C. Voia (2015): Youth Training Programs and Their Impact on Career and Spell Duration of Professional Soccer Players
A unique data set of post-war English trained soccer players is used to study the impact of the youth training program they attended on their career and spell duration. Duration models in the spirit of Abbring and van den Berg are employed to estimate local treatment effects of different training programs on players — survival in the top European leagues. The results indicate that the duration patterns of players are dependent on the youth academy they attended. ... The spell analysis outlines the nature of the competitive environment in which smaller clubs have a chance to keep up with the larger ones in terms of producing and holding on to homegrown talent.

  10. Bratberg, E. & Vaage, K. (2000): Spell Durations with Long Unemployment Insurance Periods
This paper uses data from a natural experiment to investigate the potential incentive effect of a fixed unemployment insurance period. We compare two large groups of Norwegian unemployed persons who registered as unemployed in 1990 and 1991. The last group was affected by a rule change that in practice extended the length of unemployment benefits to more than 3 years.
