- Ezeh, Chima Innocent & Onwuka, Onyema W & Nwachukwu, Ifeanyi Ndubuto (2008): Correlates Of Inorganic Fertilizer Consumption Among Smallholder Farmers In Abia State, Nigeria
This paper investigated the correlates of inorganic fertilizer consumption among smallholder farmers in Abia State, Nigeria A multi – stage random sampling technique was employed in selected local government areas, communities and respondents from the three agricultural zones (Aba, Ohafia and Umuahia) of the state. ... The results of the linear functional model indicate that four (farmer incomes, farm experiences, transportation costs and price of 50kg fertilizer bag) out of the eight variables were key determinants of the smallholder farmers’ fertilizer consumption at 5% risk level. However the combined effects of all the variables explained 57.6 percent of the variations in the total fertilizer consumption rate of the smallholder farmers in Abia state Nigeria. Higher level of subsidy on fertilizer is recommended as a deliberate policy to increase the fertilizer consumption propensity of the smallholder farmers.

Ethiopian smallholder farmers are lacking the technical skills required to make efficient use of available resources. This study aims to increase the efficiency of smallholder farmers in sesame production by estimating efficiency levels and identifying the variables influencing those levels. ... The ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation method was employed to identify the variables that influence the farmers’ efficiency levels. ... The technical efficiency of smallholder farmers was positively impacted by family size, education level, extension contact, and credit access, while negatively impacted by the distance of the sesame plot from the homestead. ... Hence, it is advisable to implement interventions that will increase smallholder farmers’ access to credit, agricultural extension services, and basic education.

Access to modern commercialization channels is key for smallholder farmers to move away from subsistence farming and overcome poverty. However, achieving that goal is challenging for smallholders given their lack of appropriate managerial practices, production technology and infrastructure. This paper examines the association between receiving trainings in two distinct entrepreneurial practices, one direct at the individual and farmer-association level and another indirect at the community level, and commercialization in non-local markets at the extensive and intensive margins. ... These correlation patterns are mainly observed among entrant farmers as opposed to those already participating in commercial markets prior to the program implementation.

Farmers’ cooperatives serve as effective means of transforming smallholder farmers’ production methods in the process of agricultural modernization in developing countries. ... Based on the 2021 China Household Finance Survey data, an endogenous switching probit model is employed to explore the impact of cooperative membership on smallholder farmers’ access to credit. The research findings indicate the following: i) Farmers’ cooperatives possess information advantages, as financial institutions gain access to smallholder farmers’ information through the organized value chains of farmers’ cooperatives, leading to a direct reduction in transaction costs and an improvement in access to credit. ii) Farmers’ cooperatives can promote smallholder farmers’ agricultural investments, increase household income for smallholder farmers, enhance the liquidity of farmland, and further improve access to credit for smallholder farmers. Therefore, farmers’ cooperatives represent an inevitable trend in the agricultural modernization of developing countries. Rural financial institutions should alter their financial models and resolve adverse selection and moral hazard issues in the credit process through organizational approaches, thereby enhancing access to credit for smallholder farmers.

This study assesses the impact of multidimensional financial inclusion on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers using the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor survey data on 2,300 rural smallholder farmers in Nigeria. Estimates from propensity score matching show that financial inclusion reduced the sole dependence of rural smallholder farmers on farm income by 37.58% but increased their engagement in both farm and non-farm income activities by 32.45%. Therefore, for policies aimed at promoting sustainable rural livelihoods and inclusive economic development, efforts to increase the financial inclusion of rural smallholder farmers should be intensified, as this strengthens the integration of farm and non-farm economic sectors.

Facing the changes in China’s agricultural products marketing channel, smallholder farmers with different characteristics choose various strategies to obtain more benefits. To analyze factors affecting smallholder farmers’ marketing channel choice, we classify four types of channels—Broker Channel, Farmers’ Retailing Channel, Wholesale Market Channel, and Cooperative Channel—and inspect 14 variables based on the survey data of 317 households from four provinces. We use a principal components analysis (PCA) to simplify these 14 variables into seven common factors and a multivariate logit model to study how the factors influence smallholder farmers’ choices. We find that compared with the Broker Channel, the Farmers’ Retailing Channel is mainly affected by the logistics factor, skill factor, risk factor, and size factor; the Wholesale Market Channel is influenced by the logistics factor and age factor; and the Cooperative Channel is mainly influenced by the age factor, logistics factor, and price factor.
