  1. Nero, Giovanni (1999): A note on the competitive advantage of large hub-and-spoke networks
This note explores the extent to which airlines operating large hub-and-spoke networks secure a competitive advantage. More specifically, this paper explores the intricate relationship which arises among productive efficiencies and profitability when the size of the hub-and-spoke network expands. To this end, Brueckner and Spiller (1991, International Journal of Industrial Organization 9, 323-342) airline economics model is generalized by allowing the size of the hub-and-spoke network to vary. The central result shows that, although the model exhibits decreasing returns to firm/network size (RTNS), nonetheless there is a competitive advantage to increasing the size of a network.

  2. Lin, Cheng-Chang & Chen, Sheu-Hua (2008): An integral constrained generalized hub-and-spoke network design problem
The hub-and-spoke network design problem determines the smallest fleet size with their routes and freight paths to minimize operating costs. We proposed a generalized hub-and-spoke network in a capacitated and directed network configuration that integrates the operations of three common hub-and-spoke networks: pure, stopover and center directs. ... Tested using the FedEx AsiaOne air network, the solution showed that the generalized network structure provided an operational flexibility, using center directs, topoffs/drop-offs, transits and rehandling via hubs, to determine the most cost-effective operations plan.

  3. Mengyuan Sun & Yong Tian & Yao Zhang & Muhammad Nadeem & Can Xu (2021): Environmental Impact and External Costs Associated with Hub-and-Spoke Network in Air Transport
It turns out that the city-to-city network has not been able to adapt well to the development of the society, and the hub-and-spoke network came into being. ... This paper explores the impact and external costs associated with hub-and-spoke network in air transport from an environmental perspective. With some mathematical models, we construct a hub-and-spoke network and take a quantitative study on the environmental impact of air transport. ... In order to make the study more convincing, two alternative networks are computed: hub-and-spoke network and city-to-city network. It is found that the hub-and-spoke network is associated with poorer environmental impact and environmental external costs because of the different network characteristics and the scale of the fleets.

  4. Shuxia Li & Yuedan Zu & Huimin Fang & Liping Liu & Tijun Fan (2021): Design Optimization of a HAZMAT Multimodal Hub-and-Spoke Network with Detour
As an efficient and reliable mode of transportation, the multimodal hub-and-spoke transport network helps to achieve economies of scale and reduce costs. Considering the dual goals of risk and cost management of hazmat transportation, a novel optimization model of a multimodal hub-and-spoke network with detour (MHSNWD) for hazmat on the strategic level is designed. ... Additionally, a detour strategy is applied, which allows for more than two hub nodes to be selected to form an optimal path between any supply and demand nodes in a hub-and-spoke network. ... In addition, a counterpart model of the multimodal hub-and-spoke network without detour (MHSNOD) is tested to validate the advantages of the proposed model of MHSNWD. The numerical experiment shows that an appropriate increase in the number of hubs and the cost budget can remarkably reduce network risk.

  5. Lin, Cheng-Chang (2010): The integrated secondary route network design model in the hierarchical hub-and-spoke network for dual express services
The network industries design and operate physical distribution networks to provide services for spatial interactions. In the hierarchical hub-and-spoke network, each center is connected through a secondary route to its designated hub, while hubs are mutually connected by primary routes. It is a variation of pure hub-and-spoke networks that may eliminate center-hub partial loads with the result of higher load factor and lower cost. We study the integrated hierarchical hub-and-spoke network design problem for dual services. ... We propose a directed network configuration and formulate a link-based integer mathematical model.

  7. Zheng, Jianfeng & Yang, Dong (2016): Hub-and-spoke network design for container shipping along the Yangtze River
Increasingly large, high-tonnage containerships are becoming a common sight on the Yangtze River, and the shipping network is being transformed accordingly. This paper reports the design of a hub-and-spoke network for a shipping company that is consistent with the characteristics of the Yangtze River. ... We then conduct a numerical experiment and test the effectiveness of the model, and finally discuss the implications of hub-and-spoke shipping network design.

  8. Bingfeng Bai & Wei Fan (2023): Research on strategic liner ship fleet planning with regard to hub-and-spoke network
In order to obtain the biggest economic benefits, large shipping firms widely use hub-and-spoke network to operate ships. The reasonable shipping network not only decreases the cost of infrastructure construction to achieve scale economies, but also be efficient to allocate the existing resources of maritime business. ... This study proposes the mixed integer linear programming model of hub-and-spoke network and liner ship fleet planning to choose the appropriate ship location and distribution, and applies Lagrange Heuristic Algorithm to solve the model. ... Our two-phase model considers problems comprehensively to complete the network design of liner ship fleet planning.

  9. Valentin CÂRLAN & Eugen ROªCA & Mircea Augustin ROªCA (2014): Urban And Peri-Urban Passenger Transport Integration Through Hub-And-Spoke-Network
The idea of organizing freight distribution chains through hub-and-spokes network can also be adapted for passengers transport. The infrastructure for individual transport, whenever motorised or non-motorised modes, in the proximity of large cities should also be developed to serve other high capacity transport networks, accomplishing all the traveller’s needs within the sustainability framework.

This paper models a single allocation multi-commodity hub-and-spoke network problem through a bi-objective mathematical model, considering the congestion in both hubs and connection links. A novel aggregation model is developed based on a general GI/G/c queuing system to evaluate the congestion of the flow of the multiple products in the hubs.
