If I set vibrate to never I still get buzzes for background messages.

Unfortunately, the Android OS on some devices (especially Samsung) issues a vibration, even if the app does not demand it. You should be able to turn off notification vibration in the Android preferences. I will keep this open and try to develop a workaround in the next weeks.

Turn off vibrate notifications

In Android 4.2, the system vibrate setting overrides the vibrate setting in most apps.

To turn on most vibrate notifications, press the Volume key down until you feel your device vibrate.

To turn off most vibrate notifications, you need to silence the notification ringtone:

Go to Settings > Device > Sound > Default notification.
Touch Silent, then OK.

Okay, so this does not work on my Galaxy 3. It still buzzes. Anywhere else I could turn things off? :)
