XFCE seems to be to most natural desktop for void. One can install void with XFCE. If someone installs just plain void with no desktop and then wants to add XFCE there is NO documentation for it. Just the names for the meta-packages, some notes on dbus etc. A little work worth done I think...
Thanks in advance!

In short (my experience):

  • install and start dbus,
  • install gvfs (Trash etc),
  • for all other partitions you don't want icons on your desktop create fake entries in fstab with 'noauto' option (for example: /dev/sda1 / ntfs noauto 0 0),
  • install a lightweight DM (for example lightdm + some greater).

I do not think this is in the scope of the handbook.

And KDE is in the scope of the handbook...?

Agreed, searching XFCE in the docs doesn't return anything. If a chapter is out of scope perhaps list steps under xorg.

I downloaded the XFCE ISO but when you follow one of the advanced install guides, you are just left with a TTY..

There's also posts on reddit where people have installed lightdm and aren't sure what to do next

Thanks but that page needs to be linked on this page at the appropriate point, I'm not sure where in the advanced steps I should switch back to using the GUI installer:

You can not. If you are using the FDE chroot guide, it's assumed you know what you want to install.
