getopt does not support the -? short option.
This is either unintended behavior, or it should be documented.

I think this may be because ? is treated like ::

util-linux/misc-utils/getopt.c

Lines 205 to 206 in 93128b7

if (opt == '?' || opt == ':')
exit_code = GETOPT_EXIT_CODE;
