Input to MRKL agent:

What's the sum of LeBron James's sons' ages?

The MRKL agent's final prompt after iterations:

Today is August 01, 2024.
Answer the following questions as best you can. You have access to the following tools:

- calculator: Useful for getting the result of a math expression.
The input to this tool should be a valid mathematical expression that could be executed by a starlark evaluator.
- GoogleSearch:
"A wrapper around Google Search. "
"Useful for when you need to answer questions about current events. "
"Always one of the first options when you need to find information on internet"
"Input should be a search query."

Use the following format:

Question: the input question you must answer
Thought: you should always think about what to do
Action: the action to take, should be one of [ calculator, GoogleSearch ]
Action Input: the input to the action
Observation: the result of the action
... (this Thought/Action/Action Input/Observation can repeat N times)
Thought: I now know the final answer
Final Answer: the final answer to the original input question

Begin!

Question: What's the sum of LeBron James's sons' ages?
Thought:Thought: To find the sum of LeBron James's sons' ages, I need to know their individual ages.
Action: GoogleSearch
Action Input: "LeBron James's sons' ages"
Observation: 19 years (October 6, 2004); 17 years (June 14, 2007);Thought: I now know the individual ages of LeBron James's sons.
Action: Calculator
Action Input: 19 + 17
Observation: 36
Thought:

We can see that there are some flaws in this prompt:

  • Repeated Thought.
  • Lack of line breaks between each ReAct.
  • Lack of line break between Observation and Thought.

Although we can get a good final output:

The sum of LeBron James's sons' ages is 36 years.

After optimization, the MRKL prompt looks better and more organized:

Thought: To find the sum of LeBron James's sons' ages, I need to know their individual ages. I can use GoogleSearch to find this information.
Action: GoogleSearch
Action Input: "LeBron James's sons' ages"
Observation: 19 years (October 6, 2004); 17 years (June 14, 2007);

Thought: I now know the individual ages of LeBron James's sons. I can use a calculator to find their sum.
Action: Calculator
Action Input: 19 + 17
Observation: 36

The final output is good too:

The sum of LeBron James's sons' ages is 36 years.
