Ragdata

Brisbane, QLD Australia

Hi, call me Ragdata.

2020 was a year none of us are going to forget quickly. In January 2020 I was feeling pretty good about where I was. In was in the 23rd year of my relatively successful, if somewhat understated career as a Software Engineer specialising in online applications. I was working for a small family-owned business, and leading a team of the most exceptional young developers I've had the chance to work with thus far. Our work was incredibly interesting, innovative, and rewarding - and it promised to take our small company in a new direction which seemed to have endless possibilities.

Like so many others that year, by the end of October, every contract we had been working to close evaporated before our eyes, the company started to struggle, and the owners decided that they needed to get back to doing what they knew best ... which, unfortunately didn't include the new things that I was working on for them.

After spending a couple of weeks wondering what the hell I was going to do, I realised that an opportunity had just presented itself. For more than 2 decades I had been building the software that other people wanted built, and being the kind of guy who really throws himself into his work, I never had the time to build the software that I wanted to build. So, I created a couple of organisations and created a list of projects I'd been wanting to work on for some time.

What's with the "RedEyed" branding?

It's just a way to stand out. As far as the name itself goes, it's a reference to the fact that - like most developers - I'll often get so tied up in what I'm working on that at some point I'll realise that that's actually sunlight that I'm starting to see through the window, and realise that I've just done another all-nighter.

As you may know from your own experience, doing such things often leads to having tired, RED EYES.

It just seemed appropriate ...

Ragdata's Principal Projects

Bash-Bits Modular Bash Library

Bash Bits is a modular bash library which contains a HUGE amount of code intended specifically for you to use in your own bash scripting projects (version 4+). The library is designed with WSL2 (Ubuntu) users in mind, but you should be able to make good use of it on most bash systems - and if not, you might learn something just by looking through the code!
