Let's explore how could we monetize the app without losing our souls. One alternative would be to put contextualized advertisement of Air Purifiers or Consumer Air Quality Stations. Some of the companies that could partner with us are:

A few ideas on how to explore these partners:

  • Better Database: partners could provide us their data on air quality so we can present closer and more accurate results to users. The source of the data would be presented when used, with text link, logo or both.
  • Indoor Air Quality Ads: surprisingly, air quality indoors can be even worse than outside in some situations. Presenting this information to the user while linking to a partner's product would be a useful way to show ads.
  • Air Quality Monitoring Devices: a more obvious way to advertise would be to show monitoring devices available for sell. We could partner with an exclusive brand or list Amazon links and make money with the referrals.

If we go with affiliate links to the aforementioned products inside our app, we might also give the users a choice to turn off those, in order to keep aligned with our open-source principle.

More specifically, if in the bottom section we show affiliate links, links to donations (see #434) or tips & tricks (#436), then we could give the user the choice to only show some/none of these categories.
