Like a lot of apps do: "Please rate us 5 stars on the store".

The question is: when do we show this popup?

Oh, I hate those! A small banner sliding from the bottom wouldn't be so bad however, letting people to continue doing what they are doing. Not sure about the "when".

Me too, I really hate them! Yes, as discreet as possible. However we need to pump our ratings up, it's still not so good on the store (around 3).
