a workaround is to use the FROM instruction:

FROM org/repo:v1.0.0 as dep1
# ...
FROM final
COPY --from=dep1  /bin/foo /usr/bin/foo

but I like the more compact form better:

FROM final
COPY --link --from=org/repo:v1.0.0  /bin/foo /usr/bin/foo

Just found out this is already implemented. You have to put the --link argument AFTER the --from argument.
