We eventually need to be able to convert metadata between concrete types.

  • metadata wrapper
  • metadata conversion when saving to another format
  • define some conversion to generic metadata formats?
  • check allowed keys and values for each source format
  • allow user definition of generic Dict metadata that can be checked and written where possible, with warnings when it isn't.
