There is no way - as far as I know - to be notified by github or sibbell when new commit comments such as "bump version for 7.12 version" show up.
Version tags would allow us to be notified when the sources related to a new release are available.

@jean-christophe-manciot Thanks for the suggestion. The trouble with this for right now is that our Github repository is a read-only mirror of our Subversion repository, and our release branches are not mirrored. The code is always available in the source tarballs in https://nmap.org/dist/ . The commits you mention are really just version bumps to indicate that the development tree is now post-release and all changes ought to have been merged.

Given these difficulties, would it still be helpful to tag these commits, given that they do not represent the actual code as released?

Or you could migrate your code onto github ...
Being notified would be very helpful to trigger a new build.
As a network engineer, I find your tool very interesting so I've published it on my PPA which offers the latest releases of some major Linux tools on Ubuntu, which could be followed by other distributions if the new "snap" package format proves to be stable & widely adopted.
