Accounting for whitespace

Is there a reason why whitespace isn't accounted for when deciding the diff delta? To me, it would make most sense if whitespace was ignored the count, and maybe also changing the definition of "modified" to any change where the characters of one of the before/after set are not a subset of the other, after accounting for whitespace.
