"Downloading C/C++ language components" is stuck or not downloading

Bug type:
extension not downloading it showing only downloading and error in running the program.

It opens and then remains on "downloading language components(windows)"

Is this happening through an update of the extension or a fresh install (for example: uninstall and re-install extension)?

Also, what version of the extension is being installed and what version of VS Code?

Same thing on macOS. After installing the plugin and restarting VSCode, a download notification appears and never disappears. At the same time, there are no other plugins installed in the editor except localization.

The server that hosts the links to the binaries could be experiencing temporary issues and as a result causing issues to download the binaries during installation.

As a workaround for installation, please try to install the offline package installation of the extension found at https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-cpptools/releases/tag/1.7.1

I was able to fix this problem by disabling the VPN working through Finland
