It would be nice to have Mastodon as a service on IFTTT: https://platform.ifttt.com/

Then it would be possible to automatically toot from an RSS feed for example.

There's two reasons this will never work outside Webhooks, which you can already use / write yourself.

  • IFTTT expects one consumer, not a bunch of instances. The service that talks to IFTTT would need to be maintained by joinmastodon/mastodon.social staff, and that's not really federated. Every instance would need their own IFTTT account. And that's a bit of a problem with the next point...
  • IFTTT wants money. Not just a bit, quite a bit actually. I think it was in the high 3 digits per month for the cheapest before they took down actual figures and switched to contact sales.

Thanks for your reply and the information. This is really good to know and I fully understand why this is problematic. Hearing about the commercial activities of IFTTT, I start to think to spend time to use open source alternatives like Huginn for this purpose. But here there is the same problem with federated netowrks: huginn/huginn#353 (comment)

Possibly this should be an issue on the project repository, not the docs?
