Bio

Luna has a Ph.D. in development economics from UC Berkeley, and used to be a doctoral fellow at the Global Policy Lab. Luna has published in top academic journals like Nature and Annual Review of Economics. Her work was covered in 323 news stories, tweeted 3,426 times, and reached policymakers in the White House and the CDC.

Her Ph.D. dissertation focuses on how new technologies such as high-resolution satellite imagery and machine learning can be used for social good, e.g. -

  • to track the long-term effects of climate change in post-war aerial photos (in the Caribbean)   → project page
  • to help governments and NGOs "see" poverty from space (in Kenya)   → project page
  • to combat the manipulation of air pollution data with remote sensing (in China)   → project page

Update: Luna will join Waymo as a data scientist in May 2021.
