How do you test / develop locally?

You are right, we need to document these aspects.

The short answer is that, when run locally, background functions switch back to the original definition.
A background function called in dev or test mode will run synchronously, make it easier to test.

Worth pointing out that if you have a DEFER_TOKEN defined (e.g. in your .env file), it will still try and use the deployed, non-local function.

You don't need it in your .env file, but I had a copy stashed there as a backup and was puzzled why it wasn't using my local code :) Once I commented it out, it was using my local code.
