In the shell lessons, I chose to use the sample data files provided by Software Carpentry. They're good, they're convenient, and they can be used to show many ways of using shell commands. However, the files contain data from fields other than earth surface processes. It would be good to gather a set of equivalent files to use in the lessons that were more relevant for our students.
