Currently it is possible to send mails if a cron job fails by specifying a mail address (MAILTO). Are there any plans to support custom notification scripts like sending messages to irc/mattermost/slack/telegram/... on failures? I think mails are quite old fashioned 😄

No, there are no such plans currently.
