"Authenticity has become a burgeoning research topic, but little work has examined concrete actions that make people appear more authentic. In forming first impressions, we often depend on others’ emotional displays—but how variability in those expressions impacts rapid social perceptions, including those essential for workplace environments (e.g., leadership potential), remains unexplored. Across three studies, participants evaluated people that, over time, displayed either high-variability or low-variability distributions of positive and negative emotion expressions, despite averages of those expressions always being the same across conditions. Variability in emotion expression led to greater judgments of authenticity, making those individuals appear especially open and genuine. When considering people for leadership positions, greater emotion expression variability also increased ratings of leadership potential, by making the person appear uninhibited in their leadership (i.e., free and open to expressing underlying thoughts and feelings). People form nuanced impressions from the variability of people’s emotional expressions."
