Formatting error with escaping dollar sign

Like in the photo, if I escape the dollar sign before a math expression with a space in between, things render correctly like in the blue box but. But a space is rendered in the preview section as well. So, if I escape the dollar sign before a math expression without a space in between things render perfectly in the preview box but the colors of the dollar signs for the math expressions render incorrectly like in the red box.
