Smooth transitions for screen saver mode

When screen saver mode is enabled, sudden movement of the timer pulls my attention from work towards the screen.
It's a nice feature against burn-in, but can it be implemented in a way that is less distractive?

Some sort of smoth fade in/out or very subtle movement would probably solve the issue.
