You aren't going to modify the global tmpfile/dirs lists if foo="$( mktmp_auto; )"; is invoked.

You need to use a "result" variable to stash output in:

mktmp_auto() {
  ...
  MKTMP_OUTPUT="$_file";
}

mktmp_auto;
foo="$MKTMP_OUTPUT";
