What did you expect to happen?

During the walkthrough (wpseo_configurator) on the Google Search Console step would expect a way to establish/verify a new Google Search Console property.

What happened instead?

I had to open another tab to add the meta key into the yoast settings before going back to configurator to finish the Google Authentication for Google Search Console

How can we reproduce this behavior?

Go through clean install with configurator to the Google Search Console, if you hadn't realized you needed to set-up a property/account then you get stuck and have to come back.

Can you provide a link to a page which shows this issue?
/wp-admin/?page=wpseo_configurator

Technical info

  • WordPress version: 4.6.1
  • Yoast SEO version: 3.9

This is the page I'm on;

Would like the Google Search Console meta setting from Webmaster Tools merged into that page, speaking on this setting & link;

Thanks I hope that makes sense.

Closing this as a non-issue.

Thanks @Djennez sorry I overlooked this.

I think what I found most jarring for new users and those who simply forget is going through the configuration you get to the Google Search Console setup and go to authorize to find there's no property setup. So going to do that you then have to break out of the configuration to enter the Webmaster Tools verification and enter your meta value, then go to GSC and setup a property. Was thinking it would be nice to introduce on that screen or prior to it the Webmaster Tools verification fields and instructions/links to setup your property. That way when you end up on the GSC auth screen you can actually set that up.

I understand a non-issue as in nothing is broken, I just feel the flow can be improved to avoid having to break out of the configuration.

@garrett-eclipse the current iteration of the configuration wizard links to an external article on how to set up your webmaster console, which you can follow to set up your property and return the the wizard afterwards. I agree that this breaks the users' flow, however, it would be an enormous challenge to have people always set up their property before starting the Wizard, since we don't know in advance why someone would start the wizard.

The wizard is being revamped, so there is a good chance that this will all change again in a feature update.

Sounds good @Djennez thank you.
If this gets looked at in the revamp I might suggest a page in the wizard just prior to GSC auth page where you input your webmasters items and it gives you instructions on setting up GSC, then on your return when you go to the GSC auth step it's all ready for you.
Appreciate you feeding back, all the best
