Have you guys considered using something like https://github.com/microsoft/FASTER for the file based cache? A file per cache item makes the file cache not a good fit for a project at work. We have millions of items in the cache and it runs on windows. There would be performance degradation getting a cache item in a folder with millions of items.

Thanks for raising the issue @Xhanti ! I haven't had to deal with a cache with millions of items, especially a file cache. Good idea though about having a cache layer around FASTER. I can't promise anything but it is something I think would be interesting to try out soon.

Might be able to give it a look through it in a few weeks time. Whether it becomes an official cache layer or not, you can experiment yourself with Cache Tower + FASTER by creating your own cache layers too.
