(Please attach an example .tex file demonstrating the problem or bug.)
Tested on line 232 of sample-handout.tex

Please describe the feature, problem, or bug:
Citations in tables increment citation counter but don't generate sidenotes.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
That there would be a side citation in the margin near the table.

What version of Tufte-LaTeX are you using? With which TeX distribution?
latest unreleased version in MikTeX with PDFLaTeX.

Please provide any additional information below.

Can you describe in more detail what the desired outcome should be?

One of the problems with footnotes in tables is that when the table gets
floated to
the next page, for example, the footnote number is now out of sequence.

You can try using the \footnotemark and \footnotetext commands individually -- I
haven't tested it so I'm not sure if it will work or not.

Not sure if this is the same issue, but citations in figure captions don't seem
to
work either. A (fairly) minimal example is attached.

Compilation of this .tex file give an error, as indicated in the attached log
file.
Putting a /protect in front of the /cite has no effect.

Simpler version of Hufnagel's \cite in \caption case that also gives the
dreaded "! LaTeX Error: Float(s) lost.":
