# Tips for Mac users

The mac executable is not shipped with JavaStics anymore. Mac users have to build stics from source. Here is a tutorial to do so.

## Install JavaStics

Download the latest version of JavaStics. If you don't have an account yet, you'll have to [register first](https://w3.avignon.inra.fr/forge/account/register). Then go the this [link](https://w3.avignon.inra.fr/forge/projects/stics_main_projecv/files) and download the latest version of JavaStics, it is `JavaSTICS-1.5.1-STICS-10.0.0.zip` as the time of this writing.

Then, unzip the file and move the folder to your home directory (or any other directory you want).

## Install STICS

### Download the source code

Download the latest version of STICS from the [same link](https://w3.avignon.inra.fr/forge/projects/stics_main_projecv/files). It is `STICS-sources-v10.0.0-r3392_with_makefiles.zip` as the time of this writing. Then, unzip the file and move the folder wherever you want.

### Set up the environment

STICS is developed in FORTRAN, so we need to install a compiler. The easiest way to do so is to install [Homebrew](https://brew.sh/). 

Then, we need to install Xtools (which is a part of Xcode). To do so, open a terminal and run the following command:

```bash
sudo xcode-select --install
```

And then:

```bash
brew install gcc
```

This will install the GNU compiler collection, which includes the `gfortran` compiler.

If these tools have been installed previously and a MacOS system update has been made after that, they must be reinstalled
to have the updated gfortran libraries. 

* Remove the command line tools:

```bash
sudo rm -fR /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools
```

* Install them again following the previous steps (xcode + gcc).


Install the Fortran Package Mananager (FPM):

```bash
brew tap fortran-lang/homebrew-fortran
brew install fpm
```

### Compile the executable

Open a terminal in the folder where you unzipped the STICS source code. Then, run the following commands:

```bash
cd stics
fpm install --prefix .
```

This will create a `bin` folder in the `stics` folder, with the `Stics` executable inside. 

### Move the executable

Rename the `Stics` executable into `stics_modulo_mac`, and move it to the bin folder inside the `JavaSTICS-1.5.1-STICS-10.0.0/bin` folder. Then, you can run the `JavaSTICS-1.5.1-STICS-10.0.0` executable, and it will use this new executable by default!

## Open JavaStics

Before running JavaSTICS, please refer to the documentation for getting which version of java is required.
For the moment, java 11 is needed.

To run JavaStics, you have to execute the following command in a terminal if the default java version is 11:

```bash
java -jar JavaStics.exe 
```
Otherwise, an alias pointing to the java 11 executable location may be used instead of `java` in the command line (i.e. java11 -jar ...)

And that's it! You can now use JavaStics on your mac!

## Troubleshooting

If you are running SticsRPacks' tutorial, you have to put the `stic_modulo_mac` executable in the `javastics` folder that was automatically installed.
