Extend iris.iterate.izip to take dim numbers as well as coord names, like iris.Cube.slices(). I have a 2D longitude coord (meaning I can't reference the dimension by name) and just found myself writing this beezer
for tau_lon_slice in tau.slices([2], ordered=True):
for dlon_ugrid_lon_slice in dlon_ugrid.slices([1], ordered=True):
for dlon_vgrid_lon_slice in dlon_ugrid.slices([1], ordered=True):
for vgrid_lon_slice in vgrid.slices([1], ordered=True):
for dz_vgrid_lon_slice in dz_vgrid.slices([1], ordered=True):
which I'm sure you'll agree is suboptimal
