BINARYMIME makes SMTP 8-bit clean, and removes the line-length limits. It is supported by Dovecot and Microsoft Exchange. This will require being able to do a MIME conversion (to quoted-printable or base64) when mail is relayed to a destination (mbox, mboxrd, most other SMTP servers) that does not support it. Hopefully, it can be done in a way that will be transparently undone by the destination MUA, without breaking PGP or S/MIME signatures.
