Dovecot provides an authentication service on an AF_UNIX socket, which supports more authentication mechanisms than OpenSMTPD supports natively.

This feature would really help.

I am currently pondering replacing a postfix with opensmtpd. Due to dependent software (Dovecot/SOGo using blf-crypt with $2y$ instead of $2b$) and existing users on the system (stuck on {SSHA512}) this is somewhat difficult.

SASL via dovecot would nicely solve this issue.
