From Matt:

when I was at NNA and we were doing the portal tutorial, one user had trouble with the collection query not working on Safari. When she would add archaeology as a search term, she would get zero results. When she switched to FireFox, it worked fine. When I tried it on my version of Safari, it worked fine. So, I had her send screenshots of the behavior she saw on FF and Safari:

451098

451097

Matt believes this was on https://demo.arcticata.io, but could be wrong about the location. I was not able to reproduce this on https://demo.arcticata.io, https://test.arcticdata.io, or https://search-stage.test.dataone.org. Matt was also not able to reproduce it himself, but says that he watched her do it several times, and worked through it from scratch a couple of times with her, and that it was definitely repeatable.

Other details from the user:

I’m running Safari 16.1 on a MacBook running Ventura 13.0.1.

Other info:

  • I got 0 results on both safari, chrome, and FF for Any Metadata Field contains archaeology on https://demo.arcticata.io/
  • I think it is possible that the user switched to a different ADC (not demo) when she switched to FireFox
  • The user did save her portal, so we might find it

@robyngit I worked through this problem (live, in front of a tutorial audience) and can positively confirm that this problem existed on her copy of safari, but not on FF or Chrome. She also did the test on both production and the demo site, and they both behaved the same way. So, while I didn't have time to track down the specific error, there is no doubt that something was happening with her specific version of Safari. That may have been fixed in newer versions, or maybe it was just her deployment. If we can't reproduce the issue, maybe this bug report is just a record of the occurrence. Although it would be helpful to reach out to the researcher and determine if the problem persists. The thing that was weird here was that she was able to successfully edit portals in the browser, just the query returns zero results in the preview pane while editing the portal. It seemed very specific to me.
