Coupled configuration with WRF doesn't work properly (or fail) w/ WRF adaptive timestep

A user recently reported that the coupled model configuration with WRF doesn't work properly (i.e. no I/O beyond the initial time step) or fail w/ a WRF adaptive timestep.

Given the requirements for hydro component and I/O time stepping this makes sense and would likely be a good bit of work to support, but we might consider putting a check in the code somewhere and/or a note in the user documentation.
