Describe the bug

All tests fail due to segmentation fault

To reproduce

The machine has 10 cores with hyperthreading. Whereas previously this would pass, the default behavior is now that tests fail unless the user knows to intervene with

I would expect the default would be to set a low job number so that it will pass and have a comment that it could be increased.

You're probably running out of memory. The test suite already tries to estimate a sane number of jobs to use, and quite explicitly prompts you to lower that number if you run into test failures:

I think this is be sufficient? We could maybe add a check for GPU memory constraints though.
