IIRC the data cart is currently not filtered at all. There needs to be some sort of filtering at the data-cart level to enable users to select a single variable from a dataset containing many variables. However, that filtering should be clearly separate from the facet navigation. IMO we can't hide the distinction between datasets and files from the user so they should be able to understand that you search for datasets then refine your search in the datacart.

Is there a timescale for fixing this issue?

Hi Stephen, are you talking about a filtering that goes beyond the "filter over text" capability that currently exists ?

OK, I'd forgotten about that option. I think "filter over text" is far from ideal. How would a user know they need that option? It's not very clear what the "text" is and how it will filter the results. Does it assume the variable name is in the file identifier?

I would rather see a workflow like

  1. Use facets to search for datasets
  2. Select datasets of interest
  3. See what files you are downloading.
    • Some sort of summary of your selection (how many variables spread of how many files)
    • Be warned if that list is being truncated (1000-file limit)
  4. Further refine your download to select a subset of files

Too much insider knowledge is needed to understand how to filter by variable in the data cart.
