Although not a public holiday, Patriot Day is observed every year on September 11 to pay tribute to all who lost their lives in this tragic incident.

On September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Virginia were attacked by Al-Qaeda. The hijacked Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania and became one of the most horrific and tragic attacks in the history of the USA. Therefore, to remember the loss of innocent lives, a bill to make September 11 a ‘National Mourning Day’ was introduced in the US House. This resulted in the observance of the first Patriot Day on 11 September 2002. Since then, this day has been observed as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Patriot Day is an important occasion celebrated in the US to recall the tragic terrorist attack when terrorists assaulted the nation by hitting the well-known buildings of the country with four hijacked planes. This attack caused the loss of more than thousands of lives and left the whole country shaken in disbelief and grief.

Patriot Day is observed across the United States of America. The flag of the US is flown at the White House and all other US buildings and offices at half-states. The citizens also display flags in and outside their houses as a part of the observances. Also, a moment of silence is observed beginning at 8:46 AM (EST), the time the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11, struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
