Inherited from Proto-Slavic *bǫdy (accusative *bǫdǫťь) , the future active participle of *byti. Cognates include Polish będący, Russian бу́дучи (búduči), Ukrainian бу́дучи (búdučy). For sense 1, compare Latin futūrus.
