Dugan
Dugan' is a surname of Irish heritage. The name was first found in County Clare where the Dugan family held a family seat of Irish nobility from very ancient times. Dugan is derived from the ancient Irish surname of Ó Dubhagáin. Other common modern variants are Duggan, Doogan, and Duggin.
The name is now found widely in all Irish provinces. However, the Dugan variant is most common in the province of Ulster. In County Donegal, it is Doogan. In the city of Dublin as well as the province of Munster, the Duggan variant is most prevalent. This also holds true for the majority County Cork, County Tipperary, and County Waterford.
- Coat of Arms: azure, a crescent argent between nine stars of eight points
- Motto: Virtve et Valore ("By Virtue and Valor")
- Etymology: the Dugan motto is derived from the Old English word dūgan
(preterite-present: dēag ‘it is useful’, dugon ‘they are useful’, dohte ‘it was useful’)
- 1. to avail, to be of use, to serve; to be fit or strong
- "Ðonne his ellea deah": when his valour avails
It is interesting to note that the motto is derived from Old English rather than from the Gaeilge (Irish Language) translation of Ó Dubhagáin which means "dark" or "black."
