Archive1/Welcome!

Hello, UnsungHistory, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few links to pages you might find helpful:

You may also want to complete the Wikipedia Adventure, an interactive tour that will help you learn the basics of editing Wikipedia. You can visit the Teahouse to ask questions or seek help. Need some ideas about what kind of things need doing? Try the Task Center.

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask for help on your talk page, and a volunteer should respond shortly. Again, welcome! Archive3/Signature Controversy

Hello, UnsungHistory,
I know you are proud of your new signature but it is very, very long. Most signatures for long-time editors are short. I think the important element in a signature is a legible username and a link to your User talk page, I don't think most of the other information is important. Other editors just need to know how to reach you and what your name is. Liz Read! Talk! 04:11, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello,@Liz,
Thanks for the concern, when I have more time i will consider shortening it, however, you are basically telling me that i should probably remove the " (See how I messed up)"part, which is the link to my Contributions page, pointing out that editors really need is just my talk page and user page, but isn't the "Read!"part of your signature a link to your contributions page, just shorter then in mine? UnsungHistory (Questions or Concerns?) (See how I messed up) 16:00, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I saw your signature in the open letter, and am not sure that the "See how I messed up" part is good for a serious legal matter, also a time-stamp is missing, - no idea how you achieved that, - looks like something messed up ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:10, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt A missing tilde does that. As we all know, ~~~~ produces a signature and timestamp, while ~~~ produces a signature without a timestamp and ~~~~~ produces only a timestamp. - ZLEA T\C 02:59, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
no,I just copy pasted my signature code overlooking the timestamp UnsungHistory (Questions or Concerns?) (See how I messed up) 03:04, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I removed it as not valid, - please try again. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:31, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The limit in the policy is 255,this is less then half,58/255 characters UnsungHistory (Questions or Concerns?) (See how I messed up) 21:36, 7 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree your signature is pretty long - it's a little hard to read as my eyes are immediately drawn to "Questions or Concerns?" instead of your username. qcne (talk) 11:39, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was coming here to say just this, and coupled with @Cullen328's note below, I'd strongly suggest you focus on something that isn't your sig or the teahouse. Neither of those is what this project is for. Star Mississippi 23:41, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As the editor with the first posting here, I want to say that the header when I originally posted my comment was NOT "Signature controversy", it was "Just testing out my new signature". So the header was imposed on this discussion, it was not coming from me to call my opinion about an editor's signature a "controversy". Liz Read! Talk! 02:09, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think it happened in this edit. —usernamekiran (talk) 07:52, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Archive4/A message from UnsungHistory to a few editors

@Liz,@Gerda Arendt,@Star Mississippi,@Aquarium substrate,@Qcne,Here is how it all unfolded in my perspective:I wanted a custom signature, just like almost all of you except for @Gerda Arendt, after some testing around with the code,I got what I wanted, just a little test to make sure it worked, the best place to do so I decided is my own talk page, and then, topic dropped, and I move on with my normal wikipedia activities, just with a different signature, but then people began making a big deal about it,and to address the length concerns:the limit is 255 characters, mine has only 58,that is 22.7 % not even half UnsungHistory (Questions or Concerns?) (See how I messed up) 17:29, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, your signature counts as 248 characters by my count, namely User:UnsungHistory|<span style="color: Purple">UnsungHistory</span>]] ([[User talk:UnsungHistory|<span style="color: Purple">Questions or Concerns?</span>]]) ([[Special:Contributions/UnsungHistory|<span style="color: red">See how I messed up</span> Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:20, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My concern has less to do with the allowed length and more with how it disrupts discussions although @Michael D. Turnbull is absolutely correct. There are allowances and you may technically be in compliance, but as a new editor your priority should not be a shiny sig. Your sig should identify your edits and give editors a way to communicate with you. Star Mississippi 19:03, 16 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Archive5/Citations are not needed for everything said in the lead section of an article

Please see MOS:LEADCITE. Basically, if it is already cited in the body-text of the article, it does not necessarily need to be cited in the lead-section. FOARP (talk) 12:34, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

help UnsungHistory (Questions or Concerns?) (See how I messed up) 00:02, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi UnsungHistory. It appears that you accidentally transcluded the petition page on your user page. The difference between transclusions and links is that a transclusion displays an entire page and its code looks like this: {{Wikipedia:2024 open letter to the Wikimedia Foundation}}, while a link's code looks like this: [[Wikipedia:2024 open letter to the Wikimedia Foundation]]. Curly brackets transclude pages and square brackets link to them. I've replaced the transclusion with a link, although you may want to remove the note you added to the userbox. Archive13/Teahouse

You currently have 310 edits to Wikipedia, of which 46 are to the Teahouse, while only 36 are to encyclopedia articles. You lack the necessary experience to be a Teahouse host. Your answers show it. They are often vague, misleading and misinformed. For example, at WP:TH#How can I hibernate my Wikipedia page for a few days?, you recommended a userpage template when the question was about a mainspace article. So, I suggest that you do not try to answer questions that you clearly do not understand correctly, and be careful to provide only indisputably accurate answers. If you are not highly confident that your answer is correct, then leave the question for a more experienced editor to answer. Your time would be better spent improving encyclopedia articles because that is the best way to learn how to advise people about how best to create and improve articles. Cullen328 (talk) 08:32, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Cullen328,thanks for the feedback, for now I will stop helping out on Teahouse, and turn my focus to articles,I am collecting opinions on the matter:User:UnsungHistory/Should UnsungHistory be a Teahouse host poll 1 UnsungHistory (Questions or Concerns?) (See how I messed up) 22:32, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is exactly the wrong response. WP:NOTASOCIALNETWORK. Please focus on articles or you will be blocked from these areas where you are being disruptive. Star Mississippi 00:04, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We do not run opinion polls about whether or not someone should be a Teahouse host. It is not a popularity pageant. There is only one test and that is helpful competence. Your record of misleading and incorrect answers at the Teahouse shows that you are not currently ready to be a Teahouse host. Work on improving encyclopedia articles instead. Archive14/Archiving

Hello, UnsungHistory, following up from a Teahouse post, did you find an archiving solution that works for you? If you still have confusions, feel free to ask. If you've got it figured out, you're of course welcome to just archive this topic. Take care, Rjjiii (talk) 03:34, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Rjjiii,I am not sure wether it is Archiving or not,but if you look on the top of this talk page there is a link,User talk:UnsungHistory/Archive,I simply copy paste them there UnsungHistory (Wrong Edit!) 03:38, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that's an archiving method. I started off doing copy/paste archiving because it felt more straightforward than using a script or bot. Glad you found a solution, Rjjiii (talk) 03:46, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Archive15/Page move reverted

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, articles should not be moved, as you did to San Francisco 4th and King Street station, without good reason. They should have a name that is both accurate and intuitive. Wikipedia has some guidelines in place to help with this. Generally, a page should only be moved to a new title if the current name doesn't follow these guidelines. Also, if a page move is being discussed, consensus needs to be reached before anybody moves the page. If you would like to experiment with page titles and moving, please use the test Wikipedia. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. OrdinaryScarlett (talk) 00:12, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Archive18/Wikiproject tags

Please stop removing Wikiproject tags. Their purpose is to be a helpful categorization and sorting system for editors, and removing them as you have been doning is disruptive. CMD (talk) 03:29, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is also no need to reply to old talkpage discussions, especially not ones from 2006. CMD (talk) 03:35, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Chipmunkdavis,I know what is the purpose of the Wikiproject tags, I have an explanation:Curacao,Sint Maarten, and Aruba are falsely categorized into the Netherlands Wikiproject - please read this source UnsungHistory (Questions?) (Did I mess up?) 18:13, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
They are not “falsely categorized”. Wikiprojects are not legal documents, they are collections of editors who determine their own scope. CMD (talk) 00:44, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is an important point generally: the rules and norms we have are meant to be useful, and one should always ask "is this helping others" before "is this following the rules" when engaging on project or talk pages. Remsense ‥  00:46, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Archive19/November 2024

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, discussion pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at User talk:Tulurm, is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Remsense ‥  23:51, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Remsense,I have already been welcomed by User:Moxy,so no need for that,I also kind of took the idea of editing other peoples comments for purposes of fixing things from this editby User:Nythar UnsungHistory (Questions?) (Did I mess up?) 23:56, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nythar UnsungHistory (Questions?) (Did I mess up?) 23:56, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed that comment because the space linked to a different, irrelevant edit. See: special:diff/ 1257663622 and special:diff/1257663622. These kinds of obvious fixes are acceptable, but no more than that. Also remember that it's pointless to ping someone on their user talk page because they get pinged when that page is edited anyway. Regards, Nythar (💬-🍀) 00:23, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In general, please allow other editors to handle such corrections themselves. If Johnuniq wanted to make this change, they are very capable of doing so. Remsense ‥  23:59, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In the example above, it is a merely technical typo, whereas you assumed much more about Johnuniq's intent. Please err on the side of caution when it comes to editing others' comments, is the core point. Remsense ‥  00:00, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Archive20/Civility

As noted when you asked on my talkpage, Tulm's comment, which you have added an odd civility warning here, does not even seem uncivil. Your warnings seem more uncivil than that, especially after you have already posted about it twice on their talkpage. You should probably withdraw all three messages. I am asking again, please stop trying to moderate talkpages. It is not helpful, and leans towards being disruptive. The conversations you posted to on Talk:Korean War are another example. So please withdraw the inappropriate warning, and perhaps look at articles rather than talkpages. CMD (talk) 01:32, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
