Tallest?
editMichael Palin visits this site on his Himalaya video/DVD series, and mentions that the palace is 13 stories high and was the tallest building in the world, before skyscrapers. What is the truth? 69.87.202.73 14:45, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

- i think there are man-made structures that is taller, dunno about inhabited building.
- but looking at it's relativity height, it is definitely high in the air even today! :D Akinkhoo 22:43, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- Highest, not tallest... --Sumple (Talk) 00:23, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
New pic
editI plan to add this picture, tell me if you agree or not. thanks --– Emperor Walter Humala · ( talk? · help! ) 17:55, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
- Red Bull (the version pictured, at least) is from Thailand. Hardly Western. --Sumple (Talk) 22:33, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Evidence?
editI will be deleting the following passage from the second paragraph of the entry:
"The site was used as a meditation retreat by King Songtsen Gampo, who in 637 built the first palace there in order to greet his bride Princess Wen Cheng of the Tang Dynasty of China, which was incorporated into later buildings."
Can anyone provide any citational sources? Scholarly research from the book Lhasa in the Seventeenth Century: The Capital of the Dalai Lamas, 2003 suggests that no palace was built to greet his Chinese bride, the Princess Wen Cheng. Rather, the court of King Songtsen Gampo was nomadic, held in movable resplendent tents and that was likely how the Princess was greeted. I think the author who wrote the above wiki statement has mistaken the Jokhang Temple for a palace. Jokhang Temple was built to house the statue of the Nepalese Princess initially. Ramoche temple was built to house the Jowo Buddha of Princess Wen Cheng. As is pretty obvious by their names, these were temples, not palaces. marvos 11:37, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- If there is no sources, then it should be removed. Merbabu 11:56, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- Just Google to find tons of references to this. rudy 15:24, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- ...well, if there are indeed reliable sources thru google, i would take back my endorsement to remove. --Merbabu 15:34, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

Contradiction
editBetween the West Chapel section "The nearby stupa for the 13th Dalai Lama is 22 metres (72 ft) high", and the Tomb of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama section "It is 14 metres (46 ft) high." According to [1] the second number is the right one. Avihu (talk) 05:17, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
External links should be checked
editWikitravel does not have an article on the Potala, The "Potala (Tibetan and Himalayan Digital Library)" link and the " Research work on possible relation with Potala, Malaya Mountains and South India" are dead links and "Research work on Buddhism in India" has no connection with the Potala (it does deal with the question of the exact location of the legendary Potalka mountain).
