History of Belize

edit

Well, shouldn't this be merged with History of Belize? This page should only hold a redirect to that one. I think. Greswik 15:31, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

The problem with that idea is that the History article would be swamped by the British Honduras aspect, which isn't good. My opinion is that the history page should be a nice, quick read on the subject (as it pretty much is, right now) and that it works best to direct readers to more detailed information about various parts of history - so we need a "main article" link to this page in the History article (which I'll add). - DavidWBrooks 15:59, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Precedent would indicate no. We have a Federal Republic of Central America and a History of Central America and this is standard, SqueakBox 16:09, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Jan 27th 2009... In Section 1.5 of this article ("Decolonization and..."), just below the 1.5 heading is a link to another article (Guatemala-Belize border disagreements). I would suppose that 'stub' article was started so that this British Honduras webpage doesn't go too far off-topic, as this British Honduras page has a lengthy description of events in the border-dispute that occurred well after "British Honduras" ceased to exist. Wondering if any ladies & gents who are familiar with this British Honduras article can sort out what belongs in both articles, or just in one or the other? I just don't want to pull tons of info out of this article with the people who worked hard to add it wondering "where'd it go??!" or "I think this this and that still belong in the British Honduras article". ;-)

Perhaps best is to put lots of information from this article's Section 1.5 into that 'stub' first, THEN pare down Section 1.5 in this article to a minimal "Here's the aftermath of the territorial disputes that occurred when British Honduras was a colony" type of writing style? Because many (not all) things after 1964 (the end of Brit Honduras's existence) seems to go off the topic (British Honduras) of this article, dunnit? I probably won't make many more edits to that 'stub' article. I left a scant few other notes in that "stub's" Talk Page, and a biggie for anyone with expertise on the British Honduras period of history is: Please scan for inaccuracies in the "transition to crown colony" period in that 'stub' article.

P.S. And then on the History of Belize page, we have this[1] shorter version of "Decolonization and...," but it looks to be intentional? (to not let the History of... page be overwhelmed by this specific British Honduras period?) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.155.196.211 (talk) 16:11, 27 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned references in British Honduras

edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of British Honduras's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "Johnson2003":

  • From Hispanic Belizean: Johnson, Melissa A. (October 2003). "The Making of Race and Place in Nineteenth-Century British Honduras". Environmental History 8 (4): 598-617.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 08:10, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Decolonization and the border dispute with Guatemala

edit

This section is clearly too long, and it should be moved almost entirely to the Belizean-Guatemalan territorial dispute#20th and 21st century negotiations section, while part of the "20th and 21st century negotiations" section of the "Belizean-Guatemalan territorial dispute" article (the first paragraph) moved here instead.--HCPUNXKID (talk) 18:56, 28 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

@HCPUNXKID: I agree and have just carried out these edits. Perhaps you might want to have a look and see what you think. UtDicitur (talk) 11:10, 25 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Government and administration

edit

The article omits the most basic facts of government and administration of British Honduras: From 1862 at least up until 1964, British Honduras was governed by British Governors of British Honduras. That very fact is only mentioned once in passing for 1931 at History of Belize by giving the name of Sir John Burdon. It's not quite clear how British Honduras and Belize were governed and administrated 1964-1981, since there still was a pro forma governor, while this article only vaguely talks of "adult franchise" introduced in 1954, a "ministerial system" introduced in 1961 and "self-government status" introduced in 1964. Was there a parliament prior to 1981? What was the de facto head of state following 1964 (or 1961?) None of these issues is addressed in the article so far. Seems there's also a List of Prime Ministers of Belize, which begins in 1961 and the post originally seems to have been officially called "First Minister of British Honduras". --2003:71:4F05:5022:8D31:EADB:C02B:E067 (talk) 17:21, 20 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

British Honduras was a British Crown colony on the east coast of Central America, south of Mexico, from 1783 to 1964, then a self-governing colony, renamed Belize in June 1973,[2] until September 1981, when it gained full independence as Belize. British Honduras was the last continental possession of the United Kingdom in the Americas.
