In 1971, Takahashi left Nikkatsu and became a freelance actor.<ref name=edb>{{cite web|url=https://eigadb.com/person/view/96362|title=高橋英樹 経歴|publisher=映画DB|access-date=6 July 2022}}</ref> In 1974, he starred in [[Kenji Misumi]]'s last film ''[[The Last Samurai (1974 film)|The Last Samurai]]''.<ref name=edb/> On television, he became a star in such ''[[jidaigeki]]'' television dramas as [[Kunitori Monogatari]] and [[Momotarō-zamurai]].<ref name="nikkansports2004"/> Modern roles are also in his repertoire. Among these is Detective Totsukawa in the ''Nishimura Kyōtarō Travel Mystery'' series.
